A theory-based empirical study might be a case study or an ethnographic study of literacy or language practices; it might test new hypotheses or replicate earlier studies with a different population; or it might be a rhetorical or linguistic analysis of text or discourse. In many cases, it will not be possible to cite all the relevant material, and it is usually not necessary to cite more than 15 to 20 items.
No student may register for more than one unit in the first quarter. The annotations, which should be no longer than a sentence or two, should demonstrate your general familiarity with each book or article cited.
